Mid-size work boats, fast RIBS and rescue and patrol boats can benefit greatly from gas-to-diesel repowers. For these applications, Steyr Motors of Austria offers its unique, 212-hp model 236 turbocharged diesel engine. Steyr's muscular 6-cylinder Monoblock design and lightweight components provide the innovative engines with possibly the best weight-to-horsepower ratio of any marine diesel engine line on the market today. Utilizing an electronically controlled engine management system and patented, two-stage Unit Injector fuel injection, the Steyr 236 has developed a reputation for immediate response, impressive acceleration and reduced fuel consumption. The dual-circuit cooling system meets current and future emissions standards and employs corrosion-resistant materials to ensure long life of the entire seawater system. Other important features include hardened valve seats, an elastic coupling on the flywheel to reduce vibration, a 14-volt/90-amp alternator and the ability to be coupled with MerCruiser Bravo I, II or III stern drives.
Trite but true, the path to decarbonization has no ‘silver bullet’ solution.
