Strong Soya Bean Supply Drives 15% Jump in Grain Shipments

"During the first six weeks of 2026, global bulk grain shipments have jumped 15% y/y, supported by a 30% y/y surge in soya bean shipments and a 17% increase in wheat shipments. Record harvests in the Southern Hemisphere are boosting exports while North America has continued to ship its high export surplus. The trade agreement between the US and China further boosted volumes, contributing to a 26% y/y increase in US soya bean shipments and a resumption of sorghum shipments,“ says Filipe Gouveia, Shipping Analysis Manager, BIMCO.Weather conditions in the Southern Hemisphere have been favourable. Brazil’s ongoing soya bean harvest is expected to rise 5% y/y, reaching a record high of 180m tonnes, equivalent to 42% of the world’s production, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

BIMCO estimates that the dry bulk supply/demand balance will remain stable in 2026 and weaken in 2027.“An improvement in the economic and demand outlook has led us to revise our demand forecast for 2026 up by 0.5 percentage points,” says Filipe Gouveia, Shipping Analysis Manager at BIMCO.The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised global economic growth projections for 2026 up 0.2 percentage points amid stimulus policies and strong investment in technology and AI. Consequently, the global economy is now forecast to grow 3.3% in 2026, the same as in 2025, and by 3.2% in 2027.

Oslo-based dry bulk operator Western Bulk has re-entered ship ownership after acquiring a minority stake in a Kamsarmax vessel alongside a group of Norwegian partners, the company said on Tuesday.Western Bulk, together with A/S J. Bulker Newbuilding Contracting Drops to Five-Year Low

Between January and November 2025, the capacity of bulker newbuilding contracting has fallen 54% y/y to 25m DWT, reaching its lowest level since 2020. Consequently, the dry bulk orderbook is now 4% smaller than a year ago, accounting for 11% of the dry bulk fleet.“Contracting has likely eased due to a cloudy market outlook,” says Filipe Gouveia, Shipping Analysis Manager at BIMCO.The number of ships contracted has seen an even steeper decline, down 61% y/y so far in 2025. Star Bulk Posts Softer Q3 Expands Fleet with New Kamsarmaxes

Star Bulk Carriers reported a weaker third quarter amid softening dry bulk markets, lower charter rates and a smaller operating fleet, while continuing to reshape its fleet through vessel sales, refinancing and newbuilding acquisitions.The company posted net income of $18.5 million for Q3 2025, down sharply from $81.3 million in the same period last year. Voyage revenues also fell to $263.9 million, versus $344.3 million a year ago, reflecting reduced TCE rates and a drop in the number of vessels on the water.

Battery Bulker to get Solar Panels

After delivering its first full-scale seagoing project last week, Wattlab has been contracted to outfit the hatches of the BRF Froan with its onboard solar energy system.Owned by Norwegian shipping company Berge Rederi, the vessel will be the world’s largest battery-powered bulk carrier.
